Assignment - Infographics - 119
These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.
Objective
Create a concept map in Canva that shows how water, food, and energy are linked in Pakistan, and why a shortage in one affects the other two.
Instructions
Central Concept
Place “Water, Food, and Energy in Pakistan” at the center.
Main Branches
Water:
- Sources: Indus River system, Hub Dam, Keenjhar Lake, groundwater
- Uses: drinking, irrigation (90% of Pakistan’s water goes to agriculture), hydroelectric power generation
- Challenges: water scarcity, groundwater depletion, seasonal flooding vs. drought cycles
Food:
- Depends on water: irrigation from the Indus basin feeds wheat, rice, sugarcane, cotton
- Depends on energy: pumps draw water for irrigation; food processing requires electricity
- Challenges: food insecurity, rising food prices, crop losses from floods and heat
Energy:
- Depends on water: hydroelectric power from Tarbela Dam, Mangla Dam, and others
- Provides for food: powers irrigation pumps, cold storage, food processing
- Challenges: load-shedding, heavy reliance on imported fuel, seasonal drop in hydro output during dry periods
Connections to Draw
Use labeled arrows to show:
- Water → Energy (hydroelectric generation)
- Water → Food (irrigation)
- Energy → Food (powering irrigation pumps and food storage)
- Energy → Water (pumping and treating water for cities)
- Food shortage ↔ Water shortage (drought reduces crops; crop failure worsens poverty and water access)
Design in Canva
- Three main branches, one per resource, each in a distinct color (blue, green, yellow).
- Connection arrows between branches with short labels.
- Each branch has a “challenges” sub-node in a contrasting shade.
Required Elements
- All three resources with their sources, uses, and challenges.
- At least 4 labeled connection arrows between the three branches.
- Local examples (Indus basin, Tarbela Dam, Karachi load-shedding).
- Title: “Water, Food, and Energy in Pakistan.”
