These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.

Objective

Create a labeled diagram infographic in Canva showing the parts of a plant and what each part does.

Instructions

Parts to Label

Draw or place an illustration of a full plant in the center of your canvas. Add callout labels for each of the following parts:

  • Roots

    • Absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil.
    • Anchor the plant in the ground.
    • Some roots store food (e.g., carrots, radishes).
  • Stem

    • Supports the plant and keeps it upright.
    • Transports water and nutrients from roots to leaves (through xylem).
    • Transports food made in the leaves to the rest of the plant (through phloem).
  • Leaves

    • The main site of photosynthesis - making food using sunlight, water, and CO₂.
    • Gas exchange through tiny pores called stomata (CO₂ in, O₂ out).
    • Transpiration: water evaporates through stomata, pulling more water up from the roots.
  • Flowers

    • The reproductive part of the plant.
    • Attract pollinators (bees, butterflies) using color and scent.
    • After pollination, the flower develops into a fruit containing seeds.
  • Fruit and Seeds

    • Fruit protects the seeds.
    • Seeds are dispersed by animals, wind, or water to grow new plants.

Optional: Cross-Section of a Leaf

Add a small inset diagram showing a cross-section of a leaf with labels for: upper epidermis, palisade mesophyll (where most photosynthesis happens), spongy mesophyll, lower epidermis, and stomata.

Design in Canva

  • Large plant illustration in the center.
  • Callout lines pointing from each part to a labeled box.
  • Use green as the main color, with a different accent for flowers and fruit.
  • Keep each label box to two or three lines of text.

Required Elements

  • Five main parts labeled with function.
  • Callout lines clearly pointing to the correct part.
  • Optional leaf cross-section as a bonus element.
  • Title: “Parts of a Plant and Their Functions.”
