Assignment - Infographics - 109
These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.
Objective
Create a linear timeline infographic in Canva showing the key religious events of the Islamic calendar across one Hijri year, in sequential order.
Instructions
What to Show
Place the following events on a horizontal timeline running from 1 Muharram to 30 Dhul Hijjah:
- 1 Muharram: Islamic New Year
- 10 Muharram: Day of Ashura
- 12 Rabi ul-Awwal: Eid Milad un-Nabi
- 27 Rajab: Lailat ul-Mi’raj
- 15 Sha’ban: Lailat ul-Bara’at
- 1 Ramadan: Start of fasting
- Last ten nights of Ramadan: Lailat ul-Qadr (most likely the 27th)
- 1 Shawwal: Eid ul-Fitr
- 8-13 Dhul Hijjah: Hajj
- 10 Dhul Hijjah: Eid ul-Adha
Gregorian Equivalent Note
Below each event, add a note showing the approximate Gregorian date for a specific year (look this up for the current or recent year). Add a note on the infographic explaining that Hijri dates shift approximately 11 days earlier each Gregorian year because the Islamic calendar is lunar.
Design in Canva
- Horizontal timeline from left (Muharram) to right (Dhul Hijjah).
- Each event marked with a vertical line, an icon, and a label.
- Alternate event labels above and below the axis so they do not overlap.
- Use a consistent color for obligatory events (Ramadan, Eid, Hajj) and a different color for recommended or significant nights.
Required Elements
- All 10 events listed above, in correct sequence.
- Approximate Gregorian date shown for each.
- Note about the lunar calendar shift.
- Title: “Key Events in the Islamic Calendar.”
