Assignment - Infographics - 106

These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.

Objective

Create a flowchart in Canva that guides a school student through the process of using a library - from entering and finding a book to borrowing and returning it.

Instructions

Flowchart Steps

Map the process in this order:

  1. Enter the library - Be quiet. Sign in if required.
  2. Know what you need - Do you have a specific title or author? Or are you browsing by subject?
  3. Use the catalogue - Check the library’s catalogue (card catalogue or computer system) to find the book’s call number.
  4. Understand the Dewey Decimal System - Books are organized by subject number. Add a brief reference box showing the 10 main Dewey categories (see below).
  5. Find the shelf - Go to the section that matches the call number. Books are ordered by number, then alphabetically by author’s surname.
  6. Check the book - Is it the right one? Check the table of contents and introduction.
  7. Borrow the book - Take it to the librarian or self-checkout. Your library card will be stamped or scanned.
  8. Return on time - Return before the due date. If you need more time, ask for a renewal.

Dewey Decimal Reference Box

Include a small reference panel inside your infographic showing the 10 main Dewey Decimal classes:

  • 000 - General works, Computer science
  • 100 - Philosophy and Psychology
  • 200 - Religion
  • 300 - Social Sciences
  • 400 - Language
  • 500 - Science
  • 600 - Technology
  • 700 - Arts and Recreation
  • 800 - Literature
  • 900 - History and Geography

Decision Point

After step 2, add a decision diamond: “Do you know the exact title?” → Yes: go to step 3 (catalogue). → No: browse by Dewey subject section directly.

Design in Canva

  • Standard flowchart shapes: rectangles for steps, diamond for decision.
  • Numbered steps.
  • The Dewey reference box in a separate panel, clearly linked to step 4.

Required Elements

  • All 8 steps in order.
  • Decision diamond with two paths.
  • Dewey Decimal reference panel.
  • Title: “How to Use a Library.”
