Assignment - Infographics - 094

These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.

Objective

Create a timeline infographic in Canva showing important inventions from the 1600s to 2020, in chronological order.

Important Note on Accuracy

Look up each invention online before adding it. Verify the inventor’s name, nationality, and year. Some inventions have disputed origins or multiple contributors - note this where relevant.

Instructions

Step 1: Choose Your Inventions

Select 15 to 20 inventions spread across the full period. Cover a range of fields: science, communication, transport, medicine, and computing. Some inventions to research:

  • Telescope (1608), Calculus (Newton/Leibniz, 1660s-1680s), Steam engine (Watt, 1769), Vaccination (Jenner, 1796), Photography (Daguerre/Niepce, 1826), Telegraph (Morse, 1837), Telephone (Bell, 1876), Light bulb (Edison/Swan, 1879), Radio (Marconi, 1895), Airplane (Wright Brothers, 1903), Penicillin (Fleming, 1928), Television (Baird/others, 1920s), Electronic computer (1940s), DNA structure (Watson, Crick, Franklin, 1953), Internet (ARPANET, 1969), World Wide Web (Berners-Lee, 1991), Smartphone (2007)

Step 2: For Each Invention Include

  • Year
  • Name of invention
  • Inventor’s name and nationality
  • One line on what it changed

Step 3: Build in Canva

  • Horizontal timeline from 1600 to 2020.
  • Mark century boundaries (1700, 1800, 1900, 2000) for visual structure.
  • Use a small icon or illustration for each invention.
  • Alternate entries above and below the timeline axis to avoid crowding.

Required Elements

  • At least 15 inventions spread across the full time range.
  • Year, inventor, and one-line description for each.
  • Century divisions marked clearly on the axis.
  • Title: “Important Inventions: 1600-2020.”
