Assignment - Infographics - 076

These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.

Objective

Create a Sankey diagram in Canva that breaks down how your daily phone screen time is distributed across categories and apps.

What is a Sankey Diagram?

Before starting, look up “Sankey diagram” to understand how it works. It uses bands of varying width to show how a quantity splits. The wider the band, the larger the portion.

Instructions

Step 1: Gather Your Data

Check your phone’s screen time report (Settings > Screen Time on iPhone, or Digital Wellbeing on Android). Note:

  • Total daily average screen time
  • Time spent on each major app
  • The category each app belongs to: social media, communication, education, entertainment, or productivity

If you do not have a screen time tracker, estimate from memory.

Step 2: Organize the Flows

Structure the diagram in two or three levels:

  • Level 1: Total daily screen time
  • Level 2: Categories (social media, communication, education, entertainment, productivity)
  • Level 3 (optional): Specific apps within each category (e.g., WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube)

Step 3: Build in Canva

  • Use Canva’s diagram elements, or generate the chart at sankeymatic.com and import it.
  • Assign a distinct color to each category.
  • Label each band with time in hours and minutes.
  • Title: “My Daily Mobile Usage Breakdown.”

Design Tips

  • Use contrasting colors for categories so the flows are easy to read.
  • Keep labels short: app name and time value only.
  • A left-to-right layout works best.

Required Elements

  • Total daily screen time as the starting flow.
  • At least 4 categories, with specific apps named where possible.
  • All flows labeled with time values.
  • Color-coded categories.
