Assignment - Infographics - 075
These instructions serve as general guidelines. Adapt them as needed to suit the specific requirements of the task or creative vision. Avoid following them rigidly without considering the context.
Objective
Create a Sankey diagram in Canva that maps how you spend a 24-hour day, broken down by activity.
What is a Sankey Diagram?
Before starting, look up “Sankey diagram” to understand how it works. A Sankey diagram uses bands of varying width to show how a quantity flows and splits. The wider the band, the larger the portion it represents. In this assignment, the quantity is time.
Instructions
Step 1: Record Your Day
Track or honestly estimate how you spend a typical 24-hour day. Break it into categories such as:
- Sleep
- Prayer (Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha)
- Study (university classes, self-study, assignments)
- Meals and eating
- Family time
- Travel and commuting
- Screen time (phone, social media, TV)
- Exercise or leisure
Make sure all hours add up to 24.
Step 2: Organize the Flows
Set up the diagram in two levels:
- Level 1 (main categories): Sleep, Productive Time, Personal and Social Time
- Level 2 (activities): Break each main category into specific activities
For example, Productive Time might split into: university classes, self-study, and assignment work.
Step 3: Build in Canva
- Use Canva’s diagram elements, or generate the Sankey diagram at sankeymatic.com and import the image into your Canva design.
- Assign a distinct color to each main category.
- Label every flow with the number of hours.
- Title: “How I Spend My 24 Hours.”
Design Tips
- Left-to-right layout works best: total hours on the left, specific activities on the right.
- Use bold, readable fonts for labels.
- Keep the background plain so the flows are easy to follow.
Required Elements
- All 24 hours accounted for.
- At least 8 activity categories.
- Color-coded flows with labeled hours.
- A clear title.
