The Three Levels

📝 Cheat Sheet
  • The three levels are the columns of the matrix.
  • The order is a progression, from beginner to leader.
  1. Knowledge Acquisition: learn the basic tools and use them simply.
  2. Knowledge Deepening: apply tools to solve real problems in a subject.
  3. Knowledge Creation: build new knowledge and lead others.

The three columns of the matrix are the levels. They describe how far a teacher has grown in using technology, from first steps to leading change. The order matters: each level builds on the one before it.

Level 1

Knowledge Acquisition

This is the starting line.

The teacher learns the basic tools and uses them in simple, direct ways. The goal is to help students gain knowledge using technology. Think of a teacher who can run a projector, find a video, type a worksheet, and use a search engine.

The focus is on becoming comfortable with the tools and using them to deliver content.

Level 2

Knowledge Deepening

Here the teacher moves past basic use.

Technology is now applied to real problems inside a subject. Students do not just receive facts; they use tools to investigate, analyse, and solve problems that matter. The teacher designs activities where the technology helps students think harder, not just look things up.

A science teacher who has students collect data with a sensor and graph it is working at this level.

Level 3

Knowledge Creation

This is the most advanced stage.

The teacher helps students build new knowledge, and the teacher also leads and innovates beyond their own room. Students create, share, and add to what is known. The teacher models being a lifelong learner, designs new approaches, and helps the wider school improve.

Technology supports a community that produces knowledge rather than only consuming it.

What sets Knowledge Creation apart?

Mixing Levels Is Normal

Most teachers do not sit neatly in one column. You might be at Knowledge Deepening in pedagogy but still at Knowledge Acquisition in policy. That is expected. The point is to know where you stand and grow toward the right over time.
