Distance Learning vs e-Learning

Distance Learning vs e-Learning

πŸ“ Cheat Sheet

Distance learning separates students and teacher by space or time, using any medium (mail, TV, radio, or online).

E-learning uses digital tools and can be online or offline.

They overlap when e-learning is used to teach at a distance, but offline e-learning used inside a classroom is not distance learning.

Distance learning and e-learning are often treated as the same thing. They are not. One is defined by distance, the other by the tools it uses.

Distance learning is defined by separation: the learner and teacher are apart in space or time. E-learning is defined by its tools: it is delivered through digital devices, online or offline. This article sets the two side by side.

Side-by-Side Comparison

FeatureDistance LearningE-Learning
Defined byDistance: students and teacher are apart in space or timeTools: learning delivered through digital devices and software
MediumMail, TV, radio, or online platformsDigital devices and software; the internet for online e-learning, none needed for offline
LocationAlways away from a shared classroomCan be at a distance or inside a classroom
InteractivityLow to high, depends on the medium usedLow to high; online tools add forums, live chat, and instant feedback
ExamplesCorrespondence courses, educational TV or radioOnline courses, virtual classrooms, offline learning apps

The clearest split is in the medium and the location. Distance learning is defined by learners being away from a shared classroom, whatever the medium. E-learning is defined by the use of digital tools, whether the learner is far away or sitting in the room.

Why is offline e-learning in a classroom not distance learning?

Where They Overlap

When e-learning is used to teach learners who are far away, it is also a form of distance learning. An online course on Coursera is both e-learning and distance learning at the same time.

But the two are not the same idea. Offline e-learning used inside a classroom, such as a teacher running learning software while the students sit in the room, is e-learning but not distance learning, because no one is learning at a distance.

So e-learning is a subset of distance learning only in its remote forms. In a face-to-face classroom, e-learning sits outside distance learning altogether.

Answer

No. Only e-learning used at a distance counts as distance learning.

An online course is both e-learning and distance learning.

Offline e-learning used inside a classroom is e-learning but not distance learning, because the learners are not apart from the teacher.
