What is Blended Learning?

πŸ“ Cheat Sheet

Blended learning mixes classroom teaching with online learning. Students learn face to face with a teacher and also study online on their own time.

Common forms:

  • Flipped classroom
  • Hybrid courses
🀝
Blended learning combines traditional classroom lessons with online learning. Students sit in class with a teacher for some lessons and use digital tools to study on their own time for others.

Many people think blended learning is just a class with a few videos added. It is more than that. The classroom part and the online part are planned to work together.

How It Works

In blended learning, students attend school for some lessons, where they talk with their teacher and classmates. At other times, they use a computer or a phone to learn through videos, games, or quizzes online. This mix gives students the gains of face-to-face teaching and digital learning at the same time.

The two parts are not separate. A teacher might set an online video for home study, then use class time for questions and practice that build on it.

Examples in the Classroom

Blended learning takes a few common forms.

Flipped Classroom: Students watch online lectures at home and use class time for discussion, projects, and practice. A math teacher might assign video tutorials for homework, then use the lesson to solve problems together.

Hybrid Courses: Some of the course is delivered online and some in a classroom. A course might set online readings and assignments but meet once a week for discussion or lab work.
