Students grew up with connected devices. Most teachers did not.

Reading, writing, arithmetic, and now computers. The fourth R merges with the first three, it does not replace them.
The shift needed
Move students from using technology only for entertainment to using it for learning. Adults often have to unlearn old habits.
Two purposes of education
- Gain: learn facts and skills.
- Use: apply them for a better life, for yourself and your community.
A child today reaches a screen before a chalkboard. The people teaching that child mostly grew up without one. That mismatch, more than any single new device, is what makes teaching in this century different from teaching in the last one.
The Generational Gap
Young people born into a world of connected devices are often called digital natives, a term the writer Marc Prensky popularized in 2001. They pick up new tools by pressing buttons and testing what happens. Many of the adults who teach them were trained in the twentieth century, with paper, chalk, and one authoritative textbook. Neither group is at fault, but the distance between the two shapes every lesson. Closing it usually means adults learning the tools their students already handle with ease.
Bridging that gap tends to ask more of the teacher than of the student, because the student is already fluent.
A teacher who trained decades ago cannot see why her class ignores a chalk-and-copy lesson, while the same students spend hours exploring apps on their phones.
What best describes the mismatch?
Being fluent with a phone is not the same as being ready to learn with one, which is the gap a school has to close.

The Fourth R
The old shorthand for a basic education was the three Rs: reading, writing, and arithmetic. Many educators now add a fourth, computers, standing in for technology as a whole. The point is not to push the first three aside. Reading, writing, and number sense still matter as much as ever. The fourth R sits alongside them, woven into how the other three are taught and used.
Treated well, technology gives students a more active role: they search, make, and share rather than only copy from the board.

From Entertainment to Learning
Most students already spend hours with messaging apps, video calls, and games. Almost all of that use is for entertainment. The task for a school is to redirect some of that comfort toward learning: turning in work through a device, reading and writing on a screen, and interacting with a lesson instead of watching it. Students tend to be more at ease with these tools than their teachers are, so the harder change usually falls on the adults.
That change often means unlearning as much as learning.
The goal is to point a skill students already have at the work they are asked to do.
The aim is not to copy entertainment, but to borrow the ease students already feel and point it at reading, writing, and problem solving.
Two Purposes of Education
Technology changes fast. A specific tool taught today may be outdated within a year. That is why a modern education leans on transferable skills rather than one fixed program: a student who learns how to learn a new tool can absorb the next version on their own.
Two purposes sit behind this. The first is to gain facts and skills. The second is to put those facts and skills to use for a better life, for the learner and for the people around them. A well-rounded education opens both doors: it prepares a person for a working life that will keep changing, and it gives them the means to improve their own circumstances.
A student who can teach themselves the next tool is better served than one who only memorized the buttons on today’s.
To gain facts and skills, and to use them for a better life.
The second purpose reaches beyond the individual: applying what you learn to improve conditions for your family and community, not only yourself.
