There is a practical reason teachers test tools before class. When a device or program fails mid-lesson and the teacher cannot fix it, students lose confidence fast. Trying a tool first, and thinking through what could go wrong, keeps a teacher at least one step ahead of the class.

That reshapes the job. The teacher’s role turns about 180 degrees, from delivering facts to guiding learning. It does not turn a full 360 degrees, because that would bring the teacher right back to the old traditional spot.

Teachers Need Time to Learn
You cannot hand a teacher a new tool and say use it tomorrow morning. The teacher may not even know which tool fits the lesson. Getting ready takes training and practice outside the classroom, and that takes time. Some teachers learn faster than others, so school leaders should be willing to give the slower ones room. A long break in the school year is a good window to put teachers through hands-on practice and let them find the rough spots before students see them.
The mechanical part, learning to click through a new piece of hardware or software, is fairly short-term. Once a teacher is past that first hurdle, keeping up with updates and new devices does not take long. Two other parts stay slow: tying instructional goals to the technology, and running a class where students work on challenging, technology-based projects. These are the pedagogy skills that training often skips, and they are learned best over time with models to copy, practice, and feedback.

The mechanical skill of using a device is short-term. Designing goal-driven, technology-supported projects and managing a class full of them is the slow, often-skipped part of training.
Time also has to be built into the lesson plan itself. A useful rule: whatever a task takes you as the teacher, double it for the students. If you can finish a task in ten minutes, plan for the students to need about twenty, because they have less experience and are still learning the tool.
