A child’s health decides how much school is even possible. Without care when sick, and food that feeds the brain, a child may not make it through the primary years, let alone do well. Health is shared unevenly: a family’s income, location, and circumstances shape the care and food a child can count on.
Health Care a Family Can Reach
Whether a child can see a doctor depends on where the family lives and what it earns. A nearby clinic or basic health unit may exist yet lack medicine, injections, or testing, so the visit solves little. Public hospitals do not guarantee full treatment, and private care can be too expensive for a poor family to consider.

What the Body Needs to Learn
Good health is built from food, nutrition, exercise, rest, and relaxation, and each of these reaches into learning. Two nutrients stand out in the results.

These are not exotic needs. Protein and iron come from everyday foods, yet a family that cannot afford a varied diet often cannot guarantee them, so the shortfall lands hardest on poor children.

Protein builds muscle and cells, and children who eat enough tend to score better. Iron carries oxygen in the blood, so a shortage brings fatigue, a short attention span, and poor concentration.
Undernourishment is one side of the problem. The other is overnutrition. In wealthier homes, diets heavy in fast food, fat, and sugar can leave a child carrying too much weight. A child who is then teased for it may lose confidence and start avoiding school, so poor eating can harm learning at both ends of the income scale.
The Room Itself
The building shapes learning as much as the lesson. Concentration, memory, and calculation all suffer in a room with stale air, poor ventilation, or high humidity, and bad air lowers the performance of the teacher along with the students. Many schools run in converted houses with few windows and little fresh air, which is not a setting where learning comes easily.
Space to move matters too: parks, tracks, and safe places to exercise tend to sit near wealthier homes, so poorer children get less of the activity and rest that keep a body ready to learn.
