Poverty does not keep a child out of school in one clean stroke. It works through smaller pressures: a home with too little income, illnesses that go untreated, a diet that starves attention, and a desk with no pencil on it. Each article here follows one of these pressures from its cause into the classroom, and asks what a school and a teacher can actually do about it.
