There is no single blueprint for an environment-friendly school. What a school teaches about climate change depends on the risks its community actually faces, and those risks are not the same from one place to the next.
No Two Schools Alike
Weather patterns show up differently from region to region, so schools differ in how they approach climate change and disaster risk reduction. A community in a dry region wrestles with scarce water and repeated drought. A community in a low-lying region copes mainly with floods and the contaminated water they leave behind. The environmental problem is real in both, but it is a different problem, and a lesson built for one does not fit the other.
The difference runs deeper than the syllabus. Even the school building may need to be constructed differently to survive the conditions around it, since a structure built for heavy rain is not the one you would build for long dry spells. Treating every school the same ignores the very thing environmental education is meant to teach: that context shapes the response.
Because the risks are local, the decisions cannot all be made far away. A plan drawn up by officials in a distant office will miss what a community on the ground can see. The better approach makes decisions on site, with young people involved, since students often raise possibilities adults would not have thought of.

Mitigation and Adaptation
Whatever form the local climate risk takes, two strategies work together to reduce it. They are complementary: most communities need both, not a choice between them.

Mitigation covers all actions that decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Those emissions come from vehicles, factories, and homes, depending on the fuel used, so reducing them is where mitigation focuses. The aim is to shrink the greenhouse effect by cutting what feeds it.
Adaptation works on the other side of the problem. It changes natural and human systems to lower the risk to the people most exposed. Emissions do not only warm the planet; they also harm health, and young children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to that harm. Reducing the risk they face, by planning, by building differently, or by protecting health during bad air, is adaptation in practice.
