Template

Handing a young student a blank sheet of paper and asking them to design something often stalls the work before it starts. A template solves that. It gives children a frame to react to instead of an empty page to fear, and it turns design into a group conversation.

What a Template Is

A template is a blank form with sections already marked and labeled, ready to be filled in. The labels do the hardest part of the thinking about structure, so the child can spend energy on the content. For a design task, a template might show the outline of a schoolyard or a building with empty boxes where features go.

Participatory Design in Small Groups

Templates work best when children fill them together. In participatory design, a child does not work alone. A small group of four or five talk, disagree, negotiate, and then settle on what goes in each empty box. Working this way signals that the community takes children’s input seriously.

The physical form should stay flexible. Cardboard cutouts can be arranged and rearranged on a base map until a group agrees on a layout, which makes design a shared, repeatable act rather than a one-shot drawing. Children might use a pencil and eraser, movable cardboard pieces, or colored sticky notes. Let them choose the medium. Telling a child exactly how to fill the template removes the very creativity the method is meant to draw out.

Designing Real School Spaces

The projects can be concrete and useful. Children might plan separate latrines for girls and boys: where they should go, how many are needed, and what they should look like. They might rework a schoolyard so every child has fair access to space for play.

Space raises a real problem worth designing around. A school running from Grade 1 to Grade 10 with twenty children per class has around two hundred students. Send them all out for recess at once onto a small ground and almost no one can actually move. One fix is to stagger the break: bring out three or four classes at a time, half an hour each, so every group gets room to run and burn off energy outdoors instead of building up restlessness in the classroom.

Staggering recess is a design decision, not just a timetable trick. It treats limited ground as a resource to be shared fairly, which is exactly the kind of trade-off children can reason about on a template.

Measuring and Recording Environmental Features

Design is one half of the method; measurement is the other. Environmental features worth tracking include rainfall and the weather, from sunny to cloudy to hazy days. With a short training in measuring, counting, and observing, children can collect data reliable enough to use in real projects. They are often better at this steady, patient work than adults expect.

Ask a group to build a rain gauge and they can do it, then read how much rain a season brings. Ask them to keep a weather chart for a month and they will log the sunny, cloudy, and hazy days. Set them to record the temperature at the same time each day, such as at recess, and they will keep it up. The skill to hand them is not the answer but the method: how to measure, how to count, and how to write it down the same way every time.
