Frameworks of Informal Learning

Not all learning happens in a classroom, and scholars disagree on how to name the rest. This chapter sets out three ways of framing learning beyond formal schooling: the European Commission’s 2001 split into formal, non-formal, and informal learning; David Livingstone’s version built around the teacher and learner; and Stephen Billett’s argument that “informal” learning does not exist at all.
