Putting a computer in the room is not the same as teaching well with it. The useful move is smaller and sharper: choose the tool that fits the task in front of you, and use it at the moment it helps. A tool picked for writing will not do much for group problem-solving, and the other way around.
Match the Tool to the Task
If you want students to write, reach for a tool built for writing. If you want them to work together, reach for one built for collaboration. This sounds obvious, yet many lessons stumble by using whatever device is on hand for whatever the teacher happens to be doing. Being clear about the task first, and the tool second, keeps technology in service of learning rather than the other way around.
The habit to build is to name the learning goal, then ask which technology, if any, serves it best at that point in the lesson.
