Purpose and Reach
Purpose and Reach
Action research has a clear purpose and a clear reach. This chapter explains what it sets out to do and what it cannot fix.
| Good action research target | Not an action research target |
|---|---|
| Improving essay introductions through peer feedback | Eliminating poverty in the neighbourhood |
| Reducing latecomers in a Grade 7 morning section | Fixing the national curriculum |
| Testing whether short quizzes improve weekly retention | Treating a student’s untreated medical condition |
| Comparing two rubrics for marking presentations | Changing the school’s funding model |
Immediate improvement of practice. A secondary purpose is the growth of the teacher who runs it.
Learning, classroom management, assessment, motivation, and teaching strategies.
Poverty, clinical issues, systemic problems, cultural forces. Knowing the limits matters.
Coming Up
The next chapter closes the Foundations module by looking at who benefits, how action research connects theory to practice, and a note for B.Ed. students starting out.
