Defining Action Research
Defining Action Research
Before anything else, you need to know what action research is. This chapter covers the basic definition, who does it, and the most common confusions.
Action research = problem + action + evidence + reflection
Remember those four parts. The rest of this guide builds on them.
Investigating your own classroom in a systematic way. The teacher is the researcher; the goal is improvement.
Systematic, reflective, cyclical. The three words that appear in every textbook definition.
Usually the classroom teacher. Sometimes a head, coordinator, or supervisor. Always an insider.
Action research is not the same as reflection alone, and it is not just any classroom experiment.
Coming Up
The next chapter compares action research with formal academic research and explains why it suits teaching.
